Chiefs May Request Free Safe Drug Disposal Resources

Ohio's opioid crisis has impacted almost every community. The enormous problem of addiction leaves many people and organizations asking what they can do to help. One important thing is to dispose of unused and unwanted medications.

The Ohio Fire Chiefs' Association is working with the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) to provide to members safe drug disposal information and resources.

About 60 percent of people who have abused prescription medications got the drugs from a home medicine cabinet. The safe disposal of medicine is an important way that everyone can help in the battle to stop abuse and keep our communities safe.

Ohio's fire chiefs may request a free supply of safe disposal kits for use in communities. The disposal pouch activates once medicines (liquids and pills) are removed from their container and placed in a pouch with water. The medicines become unpalatable and some cases, neutralized, and the bag is then safe to place in the trash.

In addition to the disposal kits, a handout will be provided, which describes other safe ways to throw away prescription drugs including utilizing take-back locations at law enforcement and emergency facilities and some pharmacies, as well as using cat litter or used coffee grounds to mix with medicines in a plastic bag or an airtight container then dispose in the household trash.

If you would like a supply of kits, please contact Jenny Camper at jcamper@lesiccamper.com, PhRMA's Ohio alliance consultant. Interested members will need to complete a Memorandum of Understanding (to confirm the bags will be provided free) and to place the order (pouches com in boxes of 200).
