Assistant Fire Chief

The City of Dayton Department of Fire is looking for an Assistant Fire Chief. Incumbents may be assigned to command one of two major divisions: Strategic Programs and Safety or Support Services and Resource Management. This is administrative and technical work as a principal assistant to the Deputy Director of Fire and the Director and Chief of Fire. Incumbents are actively involved in the development and ongoing management of the respective division’s approved budget.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Assistant Fire Chiefs within the Dayton Fire Department will manage a major Fire Department division. They are expected to develop and manage the budget in their assigned division: they will review specifications, records and reports to determine their operating needs and service demands; they will oversee budgetary control mechanisms to keep controllable costs within budgeted limits; they will use major resources such as staff, money, equipment, apparatus, and technology in an efficient manner. Assistant Chiefs help develop and implement laws and regulations governing public safety and Fire/EMS/Rescue protection for the City. The incumbents will study new developments in firefighting, prevention and emergency medical equipment, doctrine, technology and technique, to evaluate their local applicability and recommend and implement procedural, equipment and personnel changes in the assigned division. Assistant Chiefs assure an effective flow of information from appropriate personnel regarding changes in regulations, procedures and policies. Assistant Chiefs develop departmental goals, objectives and performance measures with the Deputy Director of Fire and the Director and Chief of Fire, as a member of the Senior Management Team. They develop, recommend and implement objectives, plans, programs and performance measures for their assigned division. Additionally, they will evaluate program performance by studying city statistics, trends, performance measures, benchmarking data, etc., and will develop intervention strategies and procedures where appropriate. Assistant Chiefs may recommend rewards or discipline of subordinates, assign work to subordinates, direct work activities, recommend the adjustment of grievances and evaluate the performance of subordinates. Assistant Chiefs accept responsibility for activities of their subordinates. They coach subordinates in appropriate behaviors and utilize appropriate disciplinary measures.  They are expected to lead workers effectively and promote harmony and cooperation with other Dayton Fire Department and City employees. Assistant Chiefs assume responsibilities of the Deputy Director and/or the Director and Chief of Fire when so designated. They are expected to respond to and take command of major fires and related emergencies and disasters on an around-the-clock basis. Assistant Chiefs are expected to use their influence and power constructively and appropriately. They are expected to anticipate problems and develop alternative solutions. Assistant Chiefs will analyze problems and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable solutions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college and ten (10) years of experience as a company officer or greater; a Bachelor’s Degree must be obtained within four (4) years of hire.
OR
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college and ten (10) years of experience as a company officer or greater is preferred.
OR
An Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Certification and eight (8) years of experience as a company officer or greater is highly desired. 

A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business or Fire Sciences can be substituted for two (2) years of experience as a company officer or greater.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • All candidates must possess and maintain current state and department mandated Emergency Medical Technician certification.
  • Must have a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain as a condition of employment.

 SALARY RANGE:      $93,932.80 - $127,088.00
